If you use Logic Pro on a daily basis, maybe you found – like me – that most of the available track icons were not very useful.

Logic Standard Icons

Yes, this list is fine for basic use, but quickly gets limited, especially if you use a full orchestra. Moreover, let’s face it, some icons are barely readable, and some don’t even really mean anything at first sight.

What1 What4
What2 What5

Hmm… I’m sure these have some sort of significance, but I don’t think I’m wrong by saying they could be (way) clearer.

Unfortunately, while it’d be great to be able to import one’s own sets of icons, Logic doesn’t give that possibility out of the box.

So, we can thank the guys from Logic Pro Files: they came up with a very nifty software called Logiconizer, which is so cool it makes one wonder why Apple didn’t think of that sooner. The program is basically a document for Filemaker Pro 7 (a stand-alone version is also available); via a big table, you can import various icons into Logic. These icons are, as for the Mac Os X Finder icons, 128×128 .png pictures (with a transparency layer).

Logic Pro Files also has an amazing collections of icons, ranging from microphones and amps to orchestral instruments and guitars. You’ll also find interfaces, synthesizers, processors, input and outputs… everything, really. To access the full collection, you have to register, but it’s free. Once registered, simply right-click on the icon you like, and download the image on your hard-drive.

It is then very easy to replace a bunch of ugly-looking icons by new, nicer ones… take a look:

Replace1 Tambourine2

Replace2 Bassoon

Replace3 French Horns

Replace4 Africa

Replace5 Minimoog Voyager-1

Replace6 Timpani2

There are of course icons that have no counterpart in the Logic’s standard set, like these:

Xlr01 Alesis Prolinear 720 Avalon Pre

Pipe Organ~0

Rmxout1 Atmosphere

Reason Ableton Live

Once you have downloaded enough icons, go to Logiconizer and click on a cell. The software will ask you to locate the icon file. To get back the Logic standards icons, just click again on the cell.

Here is an example of a slightly modified icon set (mostly with orchestral instruments):

Click on the picture to view it full size…

After saving the set, and relaunching Logic, the icons will automatically show up in the list.

And finally, here is a nice way to use the icons in an orchestra template:

Of course, and as always, this all depends on what your template looks like, what kind of music you write or how you use Logic. But the idea is that once you figure out the kind of icons you need and once they’re set up in Logic, it will make the whole experience clearer and – dare we say – less stressful.

N.B. Keep in mind though that replacing an icon in Logic only does so for your computer. If you move the song on another computer, it will use the icon from the standard set.

Update: You can find another icon collection on the Logic Pro Help forums.
